Hyper Plan Newsletter 21 : PERT charts and work breakdown structures

Hyper Plan v2.8.2 released

Hyper Plan v2.8.2 is now available for Windows and Mac. This is another test release, to allow customers to give feedback on the new ‘connections’ feature that will soon be available in Hyper Plan Professional Edition.

Hyper Plan can now automatically layout by connections vertically, as well as horizontally.

Hyper Plan can also propagate values across a network of connections. For example, you can propagate an estimated effort property through a network of dependency connections to work out the quickest time the project can be completed in (like a PERT chart).

The connections in the chart below show the sequence in which tasks must be completed (e.g. Task 17 must be completed before Task 21 or Task 10 are started). Each card has an estimated effort (in days). The effort is propagated along the connections to show that the quickest all the tasks can be completed is 60 days. It also shows that Task 5 has a ‘float’ of 7 days (shown in brackets).

You can also quickly find the critical path.

Propagation of properties can also be used to easily total the amount of work required in a work breakdown structure.

We have also made some bug fixes and improvements to other features. Find out more and download the new release from the release page:

This is a test release and therefore a work in progress. So we recommend you copy any important plans before editing them in this test version (you can easily do this using File>Duplicate File… in Hyper Plan).

Please let us know of any bugs or issues you encounter. We can only fix problems we know about!

FAQ

How do I add connections to my plan?

Please see the previous newsletter.

Can I select connections in the Cards pane?

Yes. But it can be a bit fiddly on a busy plan. Try zooming right in and clicking on the head of the arrow (which is larger than the stem). Alternatively drag a ‘rubber box’ over the connection(s) you wish to select.

Do I have to uninstall earlier versions before I install v2.8.2?

No. We recommend you leave v2.7.0 installed, so you can easily revert it if you need to.

Can v2.8.2 read plans created by v2.8.1 and earlier?

Yes.

Can v2.8.1 and earlier read plans created by v2.8.2?

Yes, but any connections related data read into v2.7.0 or earlier will be lost.

What sort of feedback can I send?

We are interested in any sort of feedback, but in particular:

Email us your feedback.

What happens when v2.8.2 expires?

There will either be another test version or you will be able to buy an upgrade to Hyper Plan v2 Professional Edition.

What happens when the Professional Edition is released?

You can either:

a) Continue using the current production version, which will be renamed to Hyper Plan Home Edition. But you won’t be able to use the new Professional Edition features, such as connections.

or

b) Pay the price difference between Hyper Plan Home edition and Hyper Plan Professional Edition to upgrade and get the new Professional Edition features.

How much will Hyper Plan Professional Edition cost?

Probably around $80 (US) for a perpetual license for 1 named user. This would make the cost to upgrade from Home Edition to Professional Edition around $40 (US).

When will Hyper Plan Professional Edition be for sale?

Hopefully November/December, but we make no promises. It’s ready when it’s ready.

Spaghetti connections

Large plans with lots of connections can end up looking like a plate of spaghetti. We have some ideas for ways around this. Watch this space.
